Trail Description - Ridge Trail (Rattlesnakes)

About Trail Descriptions

While many trails in New Hampshire follow ridges, this Ridge Trail connects the summits of The Rattlesnakes, two small rocky mountains on the NW side of Squam Lake which provide excellent views of the Lakes Region. The Ridge Trail receives far less use than the Old Bridle Path up West Rattlesnake, and is much narrower and steeper although experienced hikers can follow it with little trouble.

Distance: About .9 miles one-way

Description

From the ledges near West Rattlesnake where the Old Bridle Path, Ramsey Trail, and Pasture Trail end, the Ridge Trail ascends slightly to pass near the true summit before descending moderately .4 miles to near the col, where the Col Trail enters R from Pinehaven Road and a few steps later leaves L for NH Route 113. The Ridge Trail ascends moderately, then angles R around the summit to a junction with the East Rattlesnake Trail at .7 miles.

The Ridge Trail continues angling around the summit, and at .8 miles a short side path leads R to a ledge overlooking Five Finger Point, Squam Lake, and Lake Winnipesaukee. The main trail zags L and ascends to a junction at .9 miles with the Butterworth Trail from Metcalf Road. A short side path leads L 25 yards to a rock outcrop with minimal views, and the true summit may be in the woods behind the sign.
