Trail Description - Pitcher Mountain

About Trail Descriptions

Pitcher Mountain is a fire tower peak in Stoddard with excellent views from the summit ledges and surrounding blueberry fields. While a small area around the actual summit is state property where you can pick all the blueberries you can eat, most of the approach is the private Andorra Forest and money for picked blueberries should be left in the box at the trailhead.

The white-blazed Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail crosses the summit, and there are other paths used by wanderers. The route described here is a short loop from NH Route 123.

Distance: NH Route 123 to summit, about .5 miles one-way
Whole loop, about 1.3 miles

Description

From the parking area for the Pitcher Mountain Fire Tower, take the woods road R (E) following the white blazes of the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway Trail. A gravel path shortcut to the summit soon leaves L, while the woods road angles R up the hill to a fenceline at the edge of a pasture. The woods road now follows the fenceline to the warden's cabin, from which a path leads L over ledges a few yards to the fire tower at .5 miles. The short cut from the parking lot comes in just beyond the tower.

For a longer descent, follow the white blazes N across the blueberry fields. Before reaching a pole in the distance, the trail turns L and descends into the woods. At .9 miles, a main woods road appears ahead but the white blazes turn R just before reaching it. IGNORE THE BLAZES, continue to the main woods road, and turn L on it to return to the parking area at 1.3 miles.

Longer hikes can be made by continuing on the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail.
