Trail Description - Goshen Trail

About Trail Descriptions

The Goshen Trail is the original access road used to build the lodge on the summit of Sunapee Mountain, alhough it is now quite eroded and maintenance vehicles now come up using the ski area. It is probably the easiest way to walk up and is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter. For some reason, this trail is not shown on the USGS map, the free map of Mount Sunapee State Park Hiking Trails, or the Sunapee Ragged Kearsarge Greenway online section map.

Description

While there are vehicle tracks on this trail, it is not a public highway and hikers should probably park at Brook Road and walk in. Take the middle of 3 roads about 50 yards in, cross a bridge and start uphill following blue blazes. The trail soon turns L on a side road where there may be remains of an old gate, then at a clearing at .7 miles the trail turns L again and soon crosses a wide bridge. Above this point, the trail begins an angling climb around the N side of the mountain, becoming steeper and more eroded. It ends at a chain across the road on the side of a ski trail, which carries the Lake Solitude Trail, which at this point is both the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail and the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway Trail. The summit is .2 miles L on this trail.

On the descent, follow the white blazes of the Lake Solitude Trail down the edge of the most easterly (Porkys) ski trail, then turn R on the woods road with snowmobile trail signs just before the Lake Solitude Trail leaves the ski trail.

Off Season

Used as snowmobile trail up to ski trail.
