Trail Description - Chandler Brook Trail

About Trail Descriptions

The Chandler Brook Trail leads from the Great Gulf Trail 3.9 miles from NH Route 16 to the Mount Washington Auto Road above the 4-mile mark, generally following Chandler Brook. It is one of the least used trails in the Great Gulf as it connects to no other trails at the top, so the footway is steep and rough without many of the steps placed on more popular trails.

Distance: From Great Gulf Trail to the Mount Washington Auto Road, about .9 miles one-way

Description

The Chandler Brook Trail leaves the Great Gulf Trail just above its crossing of Chandler Brook, about 3.9 miles from NH Route 16. The footway is rocky and narrow with overhanging branches. Soon it crosses two small brooks, and later some overflow channels leading to them so the first section of trail is actually an island at high water. The trail runs parallel to Chandler Brook but not necessarily in sight of it. The first crossing is at .4 miles, soon followed by a second in the midst of a series of cascades which could be exciting in high water. The third crossing is also amid a cascade, then the trail begins climbing steeply up the wall of the ravine, finally crossing a boulder field to end up at the Auto Road.

There is a small paved pulloff at the trailhead, and a huge gravel one on other side of the road about 100 yards below. There are lots of cairns on rocks on the other side of road, but they have been placed by tourists and do not mark trails. Unless you arranged for a car to meet you here, your best choice is to go back the way you came.

Off Season

Auto road not open to public vehicles in the off season.

Map Notes: The USGS map omits the two lower brook crossings
