The Cathedral Forest Trail is a link in the easiest and perhaps most popular route up Mount Cardigan from the AMC Cardigan Lodge to the E. This route starts up the Holt Trail from the Lodge, turns L on the Cathedral Forest Trail to avoid the steep ledges on the Holt Trail, and finally follows the Clark Trail R to the summit.
Distance: From Holt Trail to Clark Trail, about .6 miles one-way
From Cardigan Lodge to Cardigan summit also using Holt and Clark Trails, about 2.6 miles one-way
Elevation gain: From Holt Trail to Clark Trail, about 600 feet
From Cardigan Lodge to Cardigan summit also using Holt and Clark Trails, about 1800 feet

From the junction with the Holt Trail, the Cathedral Forest Trail begins to climb moderately uphill to the L. The impressive forest after which this trail was named has largely succumbed to age and disease. At the junction with the Vistamont Trail at .1 miles, the Cathedral Forest Trail turns R and continues uphill to the Clark Trail at .6 miles.
To Mount Cardigan summit: Go R on the Clark Trail, passing turn to AMC Hi-Cabin. From the fire warden's cabin to the summit is bare rock ledge, but it is not as steep as the Holt Trail.
Parking lot plowed in winter.
Road to AMC lodge plowed by town, but low priority after storms.
Map Notes: The USGS map shows mostly ski trails and not hiking trails on the E side of Mount Cardigan. For trail locations, use the AMC map.
