Trail Description - Buttress Trail

About Trail Descriptions

The Buttress Trail leads from the Six Husbands Trail about .5 miles from the Great Gulf Trail to the Star Lake Trail about .3 miles from the AMC Madison Hut, providing a route from the middle of the Great Gulf to the Northern Peaks. The trail climbs on sidehill around several ridges of Mount Adams, with plenty of boulder hopping, a few scrambles, and one rock the trail passes under. The upper part of the trail is in low scrub although sheltered in part from NW winds. This is not a good route in wet or windy weather.

Almost the entire trail lies within the Great Gulf Wilderness, and after the first .1 miles the legal camping opportunities are very limited due to steep slopes and thick vegetation.

Distance: From Six Husbands Trail to Star Lake Trail, about 1.9 miles one-way

Description

The Buttress Trail leaves the Six Husbands Trail and immediately crosses Jefferson Brook. After passing through a wet area, the trail climbs gradually .1 miles to where the abandoned Adams Slide Trail once branched off, then turns R to angle across a large boulder field. The Buttress Trail returns to the woods and continues its angling ascent out of the Gulf, with more rock hopping farther up. The trail makes a sharp L to climb the longest slab of the ascent, then angles R around the end of a ridge. After a slight descent through another boulder field, the trail angles R up to the Star Lake Trail. Turn L for Mount Adams, or R for Madison Hut, Mount Madison, or most anywhere else.

Map Notes: The USGS map shows the first part of the trail incorrectly: the trail actually follows what is shown as Adams Slide Trail for .1 miles before angling R across the boulder field to rejoin the route as shown. The historic USGS 15' map is more accurate.
