The Jewell Trail in combination with the Boundary Line trail starts across the Base Station Road from the parking area, and descends slightly to cross the Ammonoosuc River before a gentle ascent of the ridge beyond. The Boundary Line Trail crosses more brooks and wet areas with only minor ascent before reaching the Jefferson Notch Road at 1.2 miles.
The Base Station Road may be plowed for the cog railway, but the Forest Service lot is gated in winter with roadside parking prohibited.
The Jefferson Notch Road is used as a snowmobile trail, and gated to wheeled vehicles during snow and mud season.
Map Notes: The USGS map does not show the new parking area and new route of the Jewell Trail at the bottom.
