Getting to New Hampshire

Most visitors to New Hampshire arrive by private automobile, and your own transportation is useful to reach most trailheads. Those coming a long distance may prefer to arrive by air or rail and rent a car locally, while long distance backpackers, trail crew members, and workshop attendees may not need a car at all. Most long distance routes connect through Boston, Massachusetts.

For general tourist information, stop at a highway rest area or visit the state tourist website. www.nh.gov/visitors/index.html

Bus

Concord Trailways (1-800-639-3317 or www.concordtrailways.com/concord_trailways.htm ) offers two routes from Manchester and Concord to New Hampshire's North Country. One route along I-93 stops at Lincoln and Franconia which are a long walk or a short taxi ride from the Appalachian Trail and other long-distance backpacking trails. The other route takes Rte. 16 including a stop at the A.M.C. Pinkham Notch Camp. In the other direction, these buses connect to the rest of the nation through Boston with stops at South Station and Logan Airport.

During the summer, the Appalachian Mountain Club operates a van shuttle from Pinkham Notch to north central White Mountain trailheads.

Service to Hanover on the Appalachian Trail is available from Dartmouth Coach (1-800-637-0123 or www.concordtrailways.com/dartmouth_coach.html ) and Vermont Transit (1-800-552-8737 or www.vermonttransit.com ), a subsidiary of Greyhound Lines. Vermont Transit also offers service through Vermont to Albany and Montreal.

Additional service to Southern N.H. is provided by C&J Trailways (1-800-258-7111, www.cjtrailways.com ), The Coach Company (1-800-874-3377, www.coachco.com ), and Peter Pan Bus Lines (1-800-237-8747, www.peterpanbus.com ).

Train

Scheduled Amtrak (1-800-872-7245, www.amtrak.com ) service is available to the Seacoast on the Downeast route to Portland ME and to Claremont on the Vermonter, which also stops in White River Junction VT. Free daytime weekday public transit is available from White River Junction to Hanover NH on the Appalachian Trail, but unless the northbound train is very early you will miss the last bus. Check with Advance Transit (802-295-1824, www.advancetransit.com ) for schedule changes.

Another option is to take the train to Boston and a bus to Northern N.H. from there.
